Experience Authentic Tradition: Ocotepec’s Día de Muertos “La Cereada”

What: An exclusive trip to the nearby village of Ocotepec to witness “La Cereada”—a truly profound and unique Día de Muertos tradition.

When: Saturday, November 1st at 6:00 PM

Where: Ocotepec, just a short 15-minute drive from Cuernavaca.

The Tradition:

Houses that have lost a family member in the past year construct massive, elaborate Day of the Dead altars. In an act of community and remembrance, the families open their homes to the public. Visitors are invited to view the beautiful ofrenda and place a candle (cera) in honor of the deceased.

A Cultural Exchange:

After paying respects, families traditionally offer visitors delicious treats like pan de muerto, a tamal, or a taco, along with a beverage like café, or “atole”. This is a chance to interact directly with locals and practice your Spanish in a deeply meaningful cultural setting.

Why you should go:

  • See spectacular, one-of-a-kind altars that you won’t find anywhere else.
  • Practice your Spanish by interacting with local families.
  • Gain a deeper, authentic understanding of Mexican Día de Muertos customs.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity for a powerful cultural experience!
