On Wednesday, August 12, the itinerant exhibition “Cultura Sonidera” officially opened at the historic Museo Regional de los Pueblos de Morelos (Palacio de Cortés). Running through September 6, this unique showcase invites locals and visitors alike to step inside one of central Mexico’s most energetic soundscapes.

The grand opening kicked off with a special presentation by Pedro Perea and Fausto Perea, key figures of the iconic Sonido “La Conga.”

What Exactly is Cultura Sonidera?

If you have ever walked through a neighborhood festival in Mexico City or caught a outdoor block party filled with flashing lights, pounding bass, and live voiceovers over tropical rhythms, you’ve experienced the magic of a sonidero.

Born in the working-class barrios of Mexico City mid-20th century, sonidero culture centers around dynamic DJs (the sonideros) who do far more than just play music. Using custom sound systems, intricate light rigs, and distinctive vinyl collections, they play cumbia, salsa, and tropical beats while continuously sending live shout-outs (saludos) to dancers, neighborhood crews, and loved ones in the crowd. Over the decades, what started as a grassroots neighborhood dance party evolved into a massive social and artistic movement that deeply rooted itself across central states like Morelos, Puebla, Tlaxcala, Hidalgo, and the State of Mexico.

Inside the Exhibition: 50 Pieces of Living History

The “Cultura Sonidera” exhibit features nearly 50 curated pieces tracing the origins, evolution, and creative transformation of this popular art form. Visitors can explore:

• Hand-painted posters (rótulos) and graphic art that define the visual aesthetic of the movements.
• Archival photography and memorabilia capturing decades of street dances (bailes callejeros).
• Historical gear and records showing how technology and music selection shifted over time.
  
  As Pedro Perea highlighted during the inauguration, this movement is a fundamental piece of identity for the communities that live and breathe it. Its formal recognition as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Mexico City in 2023 marked a major milestone, significantly driving efforts to preserve and share its legacy.

Beyond the Museum: Cultural Activities Across Cuernavaca

The celebration doesn’t end at the Palacio de Cortés! Throughout August and early September, cultural activities will expand across other key venues in the city, including the Centro Cultural “La Estación” and Centro Cultural “Los Chocolates.”

Highlights of the upcoming program include:

• September 4: The opening of the specialized graphic exhibition “La gráfica sonidera.”

• Live DJ Sets: Electrifying performances by Sonido Kumballa, Sonido Rumbandela, and Sonido Fantástico.

• Keynote Lecture: “Aporte del Sonidero a la Industria Musical” (The Sonidero’s Contribution to the Music Industry), delivered by Marcelo Zagal Villa from Sonido “Lasser.”
