There are certain moments during our cultural immersions that become instant classics—scenes so filled with focus, color, and tradition that they perfectly capture the “Ideal” experience.
Recently, we had the pleasure of hosting a wonderful group from the Lycée Français de New York (LFNY). While their journey through Mexico was filled with highlights, their visit to the iconic paper factory in Oaxaca, officially known as Arte Papel Vista Hermosa, stood out as a true masterclass in patience and creativity.
A Bird’s-Eye View of Tradition
The photo above has become a staple of our visits. We take it with every group, and for good reason. From this perspective, you can see the magic of the “La Fábrica de Papel” unfolding.
In this shot, the LFNY students are gathered around as the master artisans explain the soul of the craft: the fibers. In Oaxaca, paper isn’t just a product; it’s an extension of the land. Students learned how various local plants and tree barks are transformed from raw natural materials into the delicate, textured pulps ready for the workshop.
Getting Their Hands Wet
After the theory came the practice. Each student took up a bastidor (wooden frame) equipped with a tamiz (sieve) to begin the rhythmic process of straining the fibers. It’s a delicate dance—balancing the frame to ensure the pulp settles evenly, creating a perfect sheet of artisanal paper.

But the real magic happened during the “decoration” phase. Armed with:
…the LFNY group turned simple pulp into unique works of art. Each sheet of paper became a personal souvenir of their time in Oaxaca—a tactile memory of a day spent learning that the best things in life are often made by hand.

Experience it Yourself
Whether it’s the smell of the damp fibers or the satisfaction of peeling a dry sheet of paper off the felt, the workshop at Vista Hermosa is a sensory journey we never tire of sharing.
Watching the students from LFNY embrace this Oaxacan tradition was a reminder of why we do what we do: bridging cultures through art, language, and shared experiences.
