Spanish and Tamales: A Delicious Cultural Immersion!
Spanish and Tamales: A Delicious Cultural Immersion!
We believe the best way to master a language is by living the culture. Here at IDEAL Spanish Mexico in Cuernavaca and Oaxaca, that means getting your hands a little messy!
This past week, we switched out the textbooks for corn husks and had a fantastic time making one of Mexico’s most beloved traditional dishes: Tamales!
Tamales with a German Twist
This special cooking activity was led by our amazing staff and involved some of our most enthusiastic students: our wonderful German volunteers! While they are here to immerse themselves in the Spanish language, they jumped right into this culinary challenge.
The experience was a true cross-cultural collaboration. Our kitchen turned into a lively classroom where Spanish was the main ingredient! We spent the afternoon mixing the masa (dough), folding the husks, and sharing stories—all while practicing essential Spanish vocabulary related to food and cooking.
From Prep to Plate: The Joy of the Feast
Once the last tamal was neatly bundled and steamed to perfection, the real reward began. We gathered together to enjoy the delicious results of our labor. There’s nothing quite like biting into a warm, savory tamal that you made with your own hands!
Sharing that meal with our German friends was the perfect capstone to the activity. It proved that food, like language, is a universal connector.
