This week’s snapshot takes us to the colorful, historical, and oh-so-delicious city of Oaxaca!
The Legendary Cruz de Piedra (Stone Cross)
Feast your eyes on our Photo of the Week: the iconic Cruz de Piedra!
If you’ve spent any time in Oaxaca City, you’ll know this spot. It’s not just a cross; it’s a genuine landmark. Ask any local where something is, and there’s a good chance their directions start with, “It’s near the Cruz de Piedra.”
This beautiful stone cross is an absolute hub of history and activity. It marks the northern beginning of the famous Macedonio Alcalá tourist corridor—perfect for a leisurely stroll! And just a hop, skip, and a jump away is Rufino Tamayo street, where you can still spot the impressive old aqueduct that once supplied water to the city. Talk about walking through history!
The cross itself is super unique—it’s actually made from the traditional grinding stones used to mill corn. A little piece of culinary history right in the city center!
Get Ready to Fiesta!
But the Cruz de Piedra is more than just a beautiful monument; it’s often the starting line! When the city celebrates big events, particularly the massive annual Guelaguetza festival, this cross is frequently the gathering point for the vibrant calendas (parades) and convites (invitations) that kick off the fun. If you’re lucky enough to be here when one starts, get your camera ready!
