Mexican Independence Day is one of the most important and vibrant celebrations in the country, and the festivities are a fantastic way to experience Mexican culture and patriotism firsthand. While many people around the world mistakenly believe Cinco de Mayo is Mexico’s Independence Day, the true celebration takes place on September 15th and 16th. Here in Cuernavaca and Oaxaca, as in the rest of the nation, the festivities are a huge event.

The celebration is split into two main parts, each with its own unique traditions and significance.
The Night of “El Grito” (The Cry) – September 15th
The main event kicks off on the evening of September 15th with “El Grito,” or “The Cry of Dolores.” This ceremony, which takes place in city squares across the country, commemorates the moment when Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a priest, rang the bell of his church and called for Mexicans to rise up against Spanish rule in 1810.
Crowds gather in front of the local government palace. At around 11 p.m., the mayor or a government official comes out onto a balcony, rings a bell, and recites a variation of Hidalgo’s cry, naming the heroes of the independence movement. The crowd roars “¡Viva!” after each name and, finally, the official shouts “¡Viva México!” three times, which the crowd enthusiastically echoes. The air is filled with a sense of unity and national pride. The night is a party with live music, traditional food, and stunning fireworks.
The Military Parade – September 16th
The following morning, on September 16th, the celebration continues with a large military parade. In Mexico City, the parade is presided over by the President, but smaller parades and civic events also take place in cities and towns nationwide. The parade is a display of national strength and a tribute to the armed forces. It features marching soldiers, military vehicles, and often, an aerial flyover by the Mexican Air Force. This day is a time for reflection on the country’s history and the sacrifices made for its freedom.
