At IDEAL Spanish Mexico, we believe that learning a language is about immersion, connection, and experiencing the hidden gems of our beautiful region. Recently, we decided to give a proper “hasta luego” to our wonderful Australian students by heading into the cool, green heights that overlook the city.

A Journey into “Cuauhnáhuac”
Many visitors are surprised to learn that Cuernavaca is bordered by a lush, temperate forest. In fact, the city’s original Nahuatl name—the language of the Aztecs—was Cuauhnáhuac, which translates to “the place near the forest” or “near the trees.”
As the temperatures rise in the city center and the climate turns dry, there is no better escape than the Sierra de Chichinautzin. This protected national park forms a majestic northern border to our city, providing a vital source of fresh water and a natural cooling system for the entire valley.
Our journey to the mountains took us along a winding, scenic road through the woods. Despite the change in scenery, it is a remarkably quick trip—we reached our destination in just 35 minutes, trading the bustling city streets for the crisp, pine-scented air of the highlands.

Fresh Flavors at “Los Alcatraces”
Our destination was Los Alcatraces, a rustic restaurant tucked away in the mountains, famous for its incredible scenery and even fresher food.
The star of the show here is the trout. The restaurant features its own ponds where the fish are caught the moment you order, ensuring you are eating the freshest food possible. While most of our group opted for the trout or mojarra (Tilapia), the menu caters to every palate; our student Pedro decided on the savory ribs, showcasing the variety of grilled meats available.
Beyond the main courses, we shared a feast of traditional Mexican delicacies: Sopa de Hongos (A rich, earthy mushroom soup that is a staple in the colder mountain region), and Antojitos (Hand-made quesadillas and sopes, prepared with the authentic touch of the sierra)

The Perfect End to a Study Week
These Friday excursions have become a cherished tradition at our school. After an intensive week of Spanish immersion, there is something deeply restorative about sitting near the rushing waters of the sierra, sharing a meal, and practicing Spanish in a relaxed, natural setting.
To our Australian friends: thank you for bringing your energy and curiosity to our classrooms. We couldn’t have asked for a better way to celebrate your progress than among the trees of old Cuauhnáhuac.
