Echoes of the 18th Century: A Musical Treasure in Taxco

One of the greatest joys of being a guide at Ideal Spanish Mexico is that I get to rediscover the beauty of our country through the eyes of our students. Yesterday, we took a trip to the “Silver City,” Taxco, and I captured a moment that I feel perfectly encapsulates the grandeur of Mexican Baroque.

While exploring the iconic Santa Prisca Church, we were privileged to have Martín with us—a specialized guide whose knowledge of the building’s history, architecture, and religious significance is truly unparalleled. As we sat in the pews, surrounded by the glow of gold-leaf altarpieces, my eyes were drawn upward to the back of the nave.

The Photo of the Week: The Great Organ of Santa Prisca

High in the choir loft sits a masterpiece of engineering and art: The Baroque Organ.

What makes this instrument so fascinating isn’t just its intricate woodwork, but the incredible journey it took to get here. As Martín explained to us, this organ was brought over from Spain in the 18th century.

Imagine the logistical feat:

  • The Atlantic Crossing: Every pipe, pedal, and wooden panel was dismantled and shipped across the ocean to the port of Veracruz.
  • The Overland Trek: From the coast, the pieces were loaded onto pack animals. They traveled hundreds of miles over rugged terrain and steep mountains until they finally reached the heart of Taxco.

Why It Matters

Seeing the organ today, it’s easy to forget the immense effort required to bring European art to the New World. It stands as a testament to the wealth and devotion of José de la Borda, who commissioned the church, and the craftsmanship that has kept it preserved for centuries.

Moments like these—sitting in silence, learning about the “how” and “why” behind these monuments—are what make our cultural immersions so special. We don’t just see the sights; we listen to the stories they have to tell.

Did you know? The Santa Prisca Church was, at the time of its completion, one of the tallest buildings in Mexico. Its twin towers continue to dominate the Taxco skyline today.
