Don’t Forget About Oaxaca!

Hi everyone, I’m Carlos Brito, Assistant Director of IDEAL Spanish Mexico. This week, I’ll be sharing information about the many attractions of Oaxaca. Many people know us for our school in Cuernavaca, but don’t forget that IDEAL Spanish Mexico also has a fantastic campus in Oaxaca!

Our Spanish courses in Oaxaca are just like the ones in Cuernavaca: small groups of no more than 5 students, flexible class schedules (from 3 to 6 hours per day), and the option to start any Monday. We also offer many activities to help you explore the city and practice your skills.

We invite you to come study Spanish with us in Oaxaca for these five main reasons:

  1. Our Courses Drive Progress. Our methodology has been refined over many years to help you make rapid progress in a short amount of time, no matter your starting level. This is thanks to our personalized approach in small groups, which ensures you get the attention you need to succeed.
  2. Our Host Families Are Unforgettable. The host families in Oaxaca are incredibly kind and generous. Our students often say they feel “like part of the family,” and our hosts truly go out of their way to make sure their guests have a wonderful and comfortable stay. The meals are always delicious and plentiful, and you’ll never eat without being asked, “Would you like a little more?”
  3. Experience the True Mestizaje. In Oaxaca, the cultural blend (mestizaje) that we talk so much about at IDEAL is a vibrant part of daily life. Indigenous groups are still a strong and active force in the city, and you can see and feel their essence everywhere—in the food, drinks, traditional clothing, music, dance, and so much more.
  4. Embrace the Festivals. Oaxaca’s traditional festivities are intense and full of energy. Major events like the Guelaguetza or the “Night of the Radishes” (Noche de los Rábanos) are perfect examples of these colorful traditions, rich with music, dance, and amazing food. You’ll also discover countless smaller, almost daily celebrations. If you have an eye for it, these are equally enjoyable and offer a powerful glimpse into the heart of Mexico’s indigenous and mixed-race identity.
  5. Enjoy the Food and Drink. It’s no surprise if you finish your trip to Oaxaca a few pounds heavier! The food and drinks here are simply delicious. Traditional moles, flavorful tlayudas, locally flavored ice creams, and, of course, the famous chocolate will be highlights of your culinary journey. For drinks, you can try horchata with its fruits and nuts, the ancient beverage tejate (made from corn and cacao), and, naturally, the famous mezcal. In Oaxaca, you’ll become a true “mezcalier,” tasting the many different types of mezcal at local distilleries, often called palenques.

So, when are you arriving in Oaxaca? We can’t wait to welcome you here!
