Celebrating World Photography Day in Mexico

Here in Mexico, we love photography. The art form is an essential part of our lives, woven into our culture and capturing the world around us in a way that feels inherently Mexican. As a country, we are a very visual people, which you can see in our rich history of painting, cinematography, architecture, and other visual arts.

This is why World Photography Day, celebrated on August 19th, feels especially significant here. It marks the day in 1839 when the French government acquired the patent for the daguerreotype, a photographic process invented by Louis Daguerre, and presented it as a gift to the world.

For over a century, photography has played a vital role in documenting Mexico’s history, social movements, and breathtaking landscapes. We have produced many internationally renowned photographers who have captured the unique spirit and character of our country.

Trailblazing Mexican Photographers

  • Graciela Iturbide: One of Mexico’s most celebrated photographers, known for her poetic black-and-white images that explore indigenous communities and cultural traditions.
  • Manuel Álvarez Bravo: Considered a pioneer of modern photography in Mexico, his work often features surreal, dreamlike scenes and insightful portraits of everyday life.
  • Lola Álvarez Bravo: Manuel’s wife and a talented photographer in her own right, her work was instrumental in documenting the cultural and social changes of 20th-century Mexico.
  • Juan Rulfo: While best known as one of Mexico’s most important writers, Rulfo was also an accomplished photographer. His work in both mediums shares a deep and powerful visual language, capturing the stark landscapes and silent dignity of rural Mexico.
  • Frida Kahlo: Although primarily known as a painter, Kahlo was also a passionate photographer who used the medium to document her life, art, and personal relationships.

A Photographer’s Paradise

Mexico is, without a doubt, a country made for photography. Our vibrant colors, unique shapes, and natural compositions make it a veritable feast for the eyes and a constant source of inspiration. From the colorful markets of Oaxaca to the intricate architecture of Cuernavaca, every corner offers a potential masterpiece waiting to be captured.
