Here in Mexico, we love photography. The art form is an essential part of our lives, woven into our culture and capturing the world around us in a way that feels inherently Mexican. As a country, we are a very visual people, which you can see in our rich history of painting, cinematography, architecture, and other visual arts.

This is why World Photography Day, celebrated on August 19th, feels especially significant here. It marks the day in 1839 when the French government acquired the patent for the daguerreotype, a photographic process invented by Louis Daguerre, and presented it as a gift to the world.

For over a century, photography has played a vital role in documenting Mexico’s history, social movements, and breathtaking landscapes. We have produced many internationally renowned photographers who have captured the unique spirit and character of our country.
