Here at IDEAL Spanish Mexico Oaxaca, we believe learning a language is about diving into the local culture! That’s why one of our favorite group excursions takes us just north of the city to a beautiful, hidden gem: La Fábrica de Papel (The Paper Factory).

Formally known as “Arte Papel Vista Hermosa,” this factory is nestled in a lovely, small building in San Agustín, Etla. It’s not just any paper mill; it’s a unique cultural project sparked by the late, great Oaxacan painter, Francisco Toledo, alongside the San Agustín Cultural Center (CASA).
Why Go to a Paper Factory?
This is no ordinary stationery store! Our students absolutely love this experience because it offers a hands-on look at a traditional, artisanal craft. The paper created here is made from local plant fibers, giving each sheet a unique, earthy, and truly Oaxacan character.
During the workshop, the master papermaker guides us through the whole captivating process, from plant to paper:
The Raw Material: We start by seeing the regional fibers—such as cotton or amate—that are used.

Decorate Your Dreams
Once each student has made their own sheet, the creativity really takes off! You can decorate your paper while it’s still wet, embedding it with natural treasures like:
It’s a truly unique souvenir and a fantastic way to connect with the natural resources and artisanal heart of Oaxaca!
Pro-Tip: If time allows after our paper workshop, we sometimes pop over to explore the amazing CASA (Centro Cultural San Agustín), also founded by Francisco Toledo. But trust us, the art, architecture, and atmosphere of CASA is a rich topic that deserves its very own blog post! Stay tuned!
