Hi there! I’m Carlos, the Cultural Program Coordinator at IDEAL Spanish Mexico. If you ask me exactly what I do, I’d tell you that my job is to make sure that besides learning grammar and vocabulary, you leave with Mexico etched in your heart (and maybe a little mezcal in your system).

My mission is to organize the activity schedule that complements your classes. Basically, I am your bridge to the archaeological sites, colonial cities, and historical corners that make studying Spanish here a life-changing experience, not just an academic course.

A Guide Who Never Tires of Discovery

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve climbed the pyramids of Teotihuacán, walked the streets of Taxco, or explored the Historic Center of Mexico City. In Oaxaca, places like Monte Albán, Teotitlán del Valle, or the petrified waterfalls of Hierve el Agua are spots where even “the dogs don’t bark at me”—they already know me there!

And of course, we never miss a visit to a palenque to see the artisanal process of making mezcal and, naturally, to taste it… Honestly, it’s one of my favorite parts of the job! But the funniest thing is that even if I’ve been a hundred times, I never get tired of it. Sometimes I go back on my own, just like any other visitor, to discover details I missed or simply to enjoy the landscape. Just yesterday, I went to the Historic Center of Mexico City just to have breakfast at a great restaurant called “El Cardenal” with my daughter; I’ll probably take students there at some point; and we visited the “Museo del Perfume”, a nice new museum that projects the aromas of Mexico.

Tailor-Made Trips: From “Pre-Hispanic Mexico” to Social Impact

If you are coming with a group, my work starts by talking with your coordinators to understand what you’re looking for. Do you want to learn the cultural basics, or do you prefer to dive deep into specific topics? For example:

• For History Buffs: If the focus is Pre-Hispanic Mexico, we take you to “hidden” gems that don’t always appear in standard tours, such as Cacaxtla, Chalcatzingo, or San José Mogote. Here, we don’t just look at stones; we talk with archaeologists and specialized guides who explain the vital historical importance of these centers.
• For Those Who Want to Leave a Mark: We organize social work and community outreach experiences. An example that makes us very proud is our partnership with the Santa Cecilia Musical Initiation School in Oaxaca. It is a deeply human exchange where students connect with the local reality in a meaningful way.

Workshops, Flavors, and… A Little Singing?

For independent students, the fun never stops! We have the classic trips to Xochicalco or the mystical town of Tepoztlán, but we also offer activities where you can get your hands dirty and treat your taste buds. Some examples are:

• Cooking classes and Alebrije painting workshops.
• Artisanal chocolate tastings in incredible spots like Chocolatería Rebeldía in Atzompa, Oaxaca.
• Spanish through Music: Imagine learning the language by singing “Bésame Mucho” or “Cielito Lindo” with a professional singer as your teacher. It’s impossible not to have fun!

We also host talks on the topics that move modern Mexico: economics, politics, and historical myths (like the true story behind Cinco de Mayo).

We Also Know How to Relax

It’s not all studying and archaeological hikes. Sometimes, the body just needs a break. That’s why we organize getaways to “Las Estacas,” a natural paradise of crystal-clear water fed by a spring—perfect for swimming and soaking up the sun. And if a group is staying with us for a while, Acapulco and the sea breeze await us for a weekend of total relaxation!
