Today, IDEAL Spanish Mexico took a trip to the enchanting “pueblo mágico” of Malinalco, and what a day it was! We were joined by our wonderful German volunteers and a guest from a partner school, all ready to explore the rich history and vibrant culture of this unique town.

Our adventure began with a vigorous hike up the mountainside to the famous Aztec sanctuary. After climbing hundreds of steps, we were rewarded with a stunning view and an incredible look into the past. This was a site of great significance, where the elite Aztec military—the Eagle and Jaguar warriors—were consecrated. It was truly powerful to stand in a place where such a pivotal part of Aztec history was made. The ceremonial center, carved directly into the rock, felt like a living testament to the strength and spiritual depth of this ancient civilization.

Next, we explored the peaceful and beautiful Convento de la Transfiguración. As soon as we stepped inside, we were in awe of the stunning murals. Painted by indigenous hands shortly after the Spanish conquest, these frescoes depict the Garden of Eden, but with a remarkable twist—they are filled with local plants and animals. This beautiful blend of European religious tradition and native artistic expression was a moving example of cultural syncretism, a vibrant, visual story of two worlds coming together. We also visited the charming Church of the Divino Salvador, an architectural gem right in the heart of town.
No visit to Malinalco is complete without experiencing its local flavor, and our students dove right in! They explored the bustling traditional market and browsed the countless craft stands. The market was a feast for the senses, with the smells of local cuisine and the colorful array of handmade textiles, pottery, and other unique souvenirs. It was the perfect way to cap off a day of discovery and learning.

It was an incredible experience to share Malinalco’s ancient past and vibrant present with our international guests.
