A Journey of Language and Culture: Bidding Farewell to LFNY in Oaxaca

Today is a day of mixed emotions at Ideal Spanish Mexico. As we say goodbye to the students and faculty from the Lycée Français de New York (LFNY), our hearts are full.

While we have collaborated with LFNY for many years to create meaningful linguistic and cultural exchanges, this year marks our fourth consecutive year hosting them here in the heart of Oaxaca. It has been an honor to watch this partnership grow, and we certainly hope for many more to come.

More Than Just Lessons: A Deep Dive into Oaxacan Life

Our goal is always to ensure that Spanish isn’t just “studied,” but lived. This group of students didn’t just improve their grammar; they immersed themselves in the soul of our state. Looking back at their itinerary, it’s no wonder we’re breathless just thinking about it!

During their stay, the students participated in a vibrant array of activities:

  • Art & Craftsmanship: They worked alongside a local plastic artist and delved into the mystical world of Tonas and Nahuales. They learned the history behind these figures, discovered the natural pigments used in traditional Oaxacan crafts, and even painted their own. They also explored the delicate art of “velas de concha” (shell candles) and tried their hand at making handmade paper.
  • Environmental Stewardship: In an inspiring session at San Martín Tilcajete, the students helped with local reforestation efforts by planting trees—leaving a living legacy in Oaxacan soil.
  • The Flavors of Oaxaca: From tasting authentic regional cuisine to the sensory delight of making chocolate bars from scratch (a definitive favorite!), the students truly embraced our culinary heritage. They even learned the rhythmic art of making tortillas by hand to prepare the perfect quesadilla.
  • Natural Wonders & History: They stood in awe of the ancient Monte Albán pyramids, swam in the turquoise mineral pools of Hierve el Agua, and visited the legendary Árbol del Tule (paired, of course, with a local ice cream).
  • Social Connection: One of the most moving parts of the trip was visiting our beloved community social project at the Escuela Santa Cecilia in Vicente Guerrero, allowing the students to see the impact of music and education in the local community.

The Heart of the Experience: Host Families

Beyond the workshops and excursions, the true magic happened within the home. By staying with local host families, the LFNY students experienced the authentic daily rhythm of Oaxaca. These families provided more than just a bed and delicious meals; they provided a space for genuine conversation, cultural exchange, and lifelong memories.

A Note of Gratitude

We hope the LFNY students are returning home as satisfied and inspired as we are.

We want to extend our infinite gratitude to the teachers. It is their initiative, dedication, and tireless work behind the scenes that make a trip of this magnitude phenomenal. Thank you for trusting Ideal Spanish Mexico with your students’ education and well-being.

Safe travels, LFNY! Oaxaca will always be your home. See you next year!
