When we first set foot in Oaxaca in 2013 to establish IDEAL Spanish Mexico permanently in this breathtaking city, we knew we were starting a special chapter. What we didn’t know was that a chance encounter that very same year would spark a lifelong friendship with one of the most inspiring social and cultural projects in the region.

Back then, Vanessa—the dynamic coordinator of our beloved German Volunteer group—suggested we reach out to a local children’s band to explore social work opportunities for our volunteers.

To be completely honest, we walked into that first meeting expecting a typical kids’ ensemble. We prepared ourselves to politely sit through a few out-of-tune notes played with more enthusiasm than grace.

We couldn’t have been more wrong.

The moment those young musicians picked up their instruments, we were utterly blown away. They didn’t just play; they played with rich harmony, impressive technique, and an overwhelming sense of passion and hope. That unforgettable afternoon was the beginning of a beautiful relationship that has grown stronger with every passing year.

From a Children’s Band to a Community Pillar

Fast forward to today, and that modest youth band has blossomed into what is officially known as the Escuela de Iniciación Musical Santa Cecilia (Santa Cecilia Music Initiation School).

Over the past 15 years, Santa Cecilia has transformed the lives of countless young people in Agencia Vicente Guerrero, a suburb of Oaxaca City, proving that music is a powerful tool for education, community building, and social change.

A Global Community Coming Together

Through IDEAL Spanish Mexico, we have had the privilege of connecting students and institutions from all over the world with the incredible energy of Santa Cecilia:

• Group of German Volunteers: The pioneers who started it all and continue to leave their mark.
• Mundelein Seminary: Sharing deep cultural exchange and shared purpose.
• Indiana University South Bend & International School of Boston: Bringing academic and artistic perspectives together.
• Lycée Français de New York: A true favorite of ours—we’ve brought their groups to visit Santa Cecilia four times now!
• Independent Students: Countless travelers who have experienced the magic of Oaxaca’s youth firsthand.

We also want to highlight a special partnership with the Colegio Alemán de la Ciudad de México (German School of Mexico City). While our primary focus is international language immersion, we occasionally collaborate with Mexican institutions, and the win-win relationship built between Colegio Alemán and Santa Cecilia has been truly extraordinary.
