United We Stand: Why Mexico’s Real Name May Surprise You

When you start your Spanish language adventure in Mexico, you’ll discover many fascinating things beyond the language itself. One of the first surprises for many of our students comes on official documents, like their Mexican visa. While you’ve always called it “Mexico,” the paperwork will show a different, longer name: “Estados Unidos Mexicanos”—the United Mexican States.

That’s right, Mexico is also a “United States.” Just like our northern neighbor, the country is a federal republic made up of 32 states (31 states and Mexico City). The name reflects the country’s federal structure, a detail many people outside of Mexico—and even some within it—don’t know.

This discovery is a fun little moment of cultural insight. You might find yourself thinking, “Wow, we’re both ‘United States,’ but our experiences and cultures couldn’t be more different.” It’s a great reminder that even when things share a name, their identity is shaped by history, people, and tradition.

“Going to Mexico”

Here’s another charming detail you’ll pick up when you’re outside of Mexico City, in places like our campuses in Cuernavaca or Oaxaca.

You’ll hear locals say, “Vamos a México,” which literally means “We’re going to Mexico.” But they’re not talking about the country; they’re referring to Mexico City!

It can be confusing at first. Why would people already in Mexico say they’re going to Mexico? This unique phrase highlights the huge importance and influence of the capital city. It’s so central to the country’s economic and cultural life that for many, “Mexico” is synonymous with its capital.

These small linguistic and cultural nuances are the kind of things you only learn by being here, living the language. It’s these kinds of discoveries that make learning Spanish with us so much more than just a class—it’s an immersive, eye-opening experience.

So, the next time you hear someone say “Estados Unidos Mexicanos,” you’ll be in on the secret. And when you hear a local in Cuernavaca say they’re going “to Mexico,” you’ll know exactly what they mean!
