Whenever friends or students ask us about essential Mexico City experiences, Xochimilco is always at the top of our list. This UNESCO World Heritage site is famous for its ancient chinampas (floating gardens) built by the Aztecs and its maze of colorful canals. But during a recent visit with our family visiting all the way from Switzerland, we decided to skip the usual high-energy route and try something entirely new.

Instead of heading to Embarcadero Nuevo Nativitas—the bustling hub famous for hundreds of lively trajineras, floating mariachi bands, artisan vendors, and non-stop fiesta energy—we set our sights on Embarcadero Fernando Celada. Named after the famed poet, playwright, and journalist native to Xochimilco, this dock offers a completely different gateway to the canals.

A Hidden Culinary Gem in Central Xochimilco

Before setting sail, we took advantage of our location to explore the historical heart of Xochimilco. Tucked away in the narrow streets near the town square, we discovered Patio Ciento20, a delightful hidden restaurant serving outstanding local and traditional Mexican dishes. It provided the perfect quiet setup and authentic flavor before our journey on the water.

Tranquility on the Water

Boarding our trajinera at Fernando Celada instantly transported us into a peaceful, reflective side of Xochimilco. The route was remarkably calm and soothing, offering scenic views of lush vegetation and quiet waters. While we still spotted a few boatloads of local families enjoying music, food, and laughter, the overall ambiance allowed us to absorb the pure, timeless magic of the wetlands without the overwhelming noise of the main party docks. It was the exact serene experience our Swiss family was hoping for.

A Local Touch to End the Day

We wrapped up our afternoon back on land with a visit to the local Zócalo and the historic Cathedral of San Bernardino de Siena. Stepping inside, we were treated to a heartwarming glimpse of daily Mexican culture: a vibrant Quinceañera mass in full celebration, surrounded by flowers, family, and tradition.
