Tomorrow, the biggest sporting event on the planet officially kicks off. While the official name is the FIFA World Cup, here in Mexico, you will only ever hear it called one thing: El Mundial.
This historic tournament is being co-hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Across our nation, the excitement is palpable. Football—or futbol, as we call it—isn’t just a game here; it is a shared heartbeat and a cultural cornerstone that ignites unmatched passion.
The Magic of the Cascarita
Why is football so deeply rooted in Mexican culture? Because it is beautifully democratic. You don’t need expensive gear or pristine fields. All you need is a ball—or even a makeshift plastic bottle—and enthusiasm.
If you see an informal, spontaneous pickup game happening on a neighborhood street, you are witnessing a cascarita. When locals want to play, they’ll say:
“¡Hay que echarnos una cascarita!” (Let’s throw together a pickup game!)
To set up a cascarita, regular stones or backpacks serve as goalposts, the street is the pitch, and everyone is welcome.

Legendary Rivalries and High Passions
For those looking to understand the local football landscape, Mexico boasts a professional league filled with history. Legendary teams like Los Pumas (representing the National Autonomous University of Mexico), Las Águilas del América, and Las Chivas de Guadalajara split the country’s loyalties.
When these teams meet—especially in clásicos like Chivas vs. América or Pumas vs. América—the atmosphere is electric, and the banter among fans lasts for weeks.
While Mexico might not traditionally hold the powerhouse status of Latin American giants like Brazil or Argentina, hope springs eternal. We always dream of making it to the grand final. This year, playing on home soil, we are collectively “cruzando los dedos” (crossing our fingers) for a historic run!
The “México Real”: Joy Amidst Social Reality
The tournament begins with a massive opening match at the iconic Estadio Azteca—which has been temporarily renamed Estadio Ciudad de México for the tournament, though no local will ever call it that.
However, at IDEAL, our philosophy has always been to share the México real—the authentic, multi-layered reality of our country, beyond just the tourist brochures. Right now, not everything is picture-perfect. Mexico City is currently a hub for powerful social protests.
Several groups are utilizing the global spotlight of El Mundial to make their voices heard, including:

While these demonstrations around the stadium and downtown present logistical challenges for navigating the city, they reflect the deep social complexities of modern Mexico. We believe understanding a language means understanding the lived experiences of its people, and we will be diving deeper into these important social topics in upcoming blog posts.
A Warm Welcome to the World
Despite the complex social landscape, the spirit of hospitality remains unchanged. Our goal as Mexicans is for every visitor—whether walking the streets of Mexico City, studying in Cuernavaca, or watching from across the globe—to experience the genuine warmth of our people.
Football has a unique power to transcend borders, turning strangers into a single community for 90 minutes.
To all the students, travelers, and football fans arriving: ¡Bienvenidos a México todos! Enjoy the games, embrace the culture, and maybe even join in on a local cascarita.
