The past month, on February 22, and if you are following international news, you may have seen reports regarding a major security operation in Mexico. A high-profile criminal leader was neutralized by federal forces, a significant event that understandably sparks conversations about safety and the future of the country.
At Ideal Spanish Mexico, we believe in transparency. While we usually prefer to talk about the beauty of our language and the warmth of our culture, we know that to truly understand Mexico, one must also understand its complexities.

The “Monolith” Misconception
It is a common human tendency to view distant lands as uniform blocks. When people outside of Mexico hear news about “violence in Mexico,” they often imagine the entire country is experiencing the same situation.
We Mexicans do the same! When we think of Japan, Germany, “Europe,” or even the United States, we often forget the vast regional differences in culture, economy, and safety within those borders. Mexico is a massive, diverse country. What happens in one state does not necessarily define the reality of another. Our security landscape is as nuanced as our geography.
A Localized Reality
The events of the past month created a sense of zozobra (anxiety) in specific regions. Following the operation against this criminal group, there has been a localized reaction. However, it is crucial to note that this tension is currently concentrated in six specific states where that group held influence.
In these areas, the situation is being monitored closely. But across the vast majority of Mexico’s 26 states, daily life continues without interruption.

Our Commitment: Staying Informed and Connected
We don’t just “hope” for the best; we are actively involved in the structures that keep our cities safe. Ideal Spanish Mexico is a committed member of:
Through these memberships, we are in constant, direct contact with state and local authorities. This proactive stance is essential for the benefit of our students and for our own peace of mind as citizens.
